Blending and Segmenting

I will add more about activities and teaching strategies throughout the year. Below, however, you will see some of the homework pages that I send at various times of the year for practice with blending and segmenting words. One page is more for teaching the child to use "sight word chunks" to help with sounding out big words. I used these for homework assignments (except for the "sight word chunks" page, which we did in centers first), but these could be used in small-group instruction, as word lists to help you meet varying student levels during blending instruction, etc. I find that I do a better job in leading blending and segmenting activities -- in whole-group or small-group -- if I prepare a list of words in advance. I am going to work on more of these for the current school year.

Web resource: For the "sight word chunks" blending page, I used this website to help me generate words. You type in the word you want to use (for example, "and"), and it will generate a long list of words that include "and" inside them. http://www.wordles.com/getWordsInWords.aspx
